Stephen Wood's Personal Biography

Stephen Wood is a composer and performer working out of Atlanta, Georgia and Columbus, Ohio. Stephen’s main compositional vehicle is the jazz group, “The Stephen Wood Ensemble”, through which he just released the ensemble’s debut CD – “Inaudible”.

“Inaudible” is an impressive full-length record featuring an orchestrated nonet masterfully improvising over Stephen Wood’s evocative compositions. Wood’s strengths lie in his versatility, attention to nuance, and thorough understanding of many styles and genres – from the classical to contemporary. His creative voice reveals a detailed attention to harmony and rhythm, and a great passion for the expressive power of sound.

A graduate of The Ohio State University, Wood has studied composition and piano technique in classical and jazz styles under composer Jan Radzynski and jazz pianist Bobby Floyd. Currently, Stephen is studying under the Kevin Bales Music Studios in Atlanta. In 2003, Wood received his first commissioned score for a string trio to accompany an OSU graduate dance performance. As a participant of the 2004 Bach Contemporary Music Festival in Eugene, Oregon Stephen received master classes from George Crumb and Krystof Penderecki. In March of 2005, Stephen was a featured guest artist at the Fisk University Department of Music’s Spring Arts Festival. As a guest artist Stephen was commissioned to write a new work for the Fisk University Jazz ensemble and had the pleasure of performing the piece, “Faces”, with the ensemble.

Before relocating to Atlanta in 2007, Stephen led the band “Postal” in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to playing around the Midwest region, Stephen released the Postal cd “Theory of Chaconne” to critical acclaim.

Currently, The Stephen Wood Ensemble operates with two satellite ensembles, a veteran group of Columbus, Ohio’s nationally acclaimed musicians, and a newly formed group of Atlanta, Georgia’s premier performers.
